The Retroverse
Hey there! Welcome to my creative world, where the past and present come together in what I call The Retroverse. This vision is all about mixing whimsy, fantasy, and nostalgia to create something unique with photography. As I dive deeper into this concept, I want to share my journey, challenges, and inspirations with you. My hope is to connect with fellow artists and anyone who appreciates a bit of retro magic.
What inspired the creation of the Boudoir Retroverse,
and how did you develop this unique concept?
The idea for The Retroverse came from my love for vintage styles and a desire to merge them with modern fantasy elements. I’ve always been drawn to the vibrant colors and bold patterns of the 70s and 80s, and I wanted to create a world where these elements could coexist with whimsical, otherworldly themes. This concept evolved as I began experimenting with photo shoots, often inspired by a mix of personal experiences and pop culture influences like The Birdcage and Miami’s Art Deco vibe.
How do you capture this dreamscape in a photo?
It’s all about the magic in the details – the play of light on the skin, the camera's angle, and the expression in the model’s eyes. Every element comes together to capture a moment frozen in time.
Defining the Retroverse
So, what exactly is The Retroverse?
It’s a space where decades collide, a living, breathing world that blends trends, styles, and aesthetics into something entirely new. It’s about capturing the essence of past eras while twisting them into modern reality.
Take my recent shoot with Bella, for example. With nothing but a broken lens and her simple swim attire, we created the illusion of a vintage cruise vacation, only this one exists somewhere between the 1940s and the present day. That seamless fusion of old and new is what lies at the heart of The Retroverse.
But The Retroverse is more than a concept. It’s a world in itself, vast, alive, and limitless. The same universe where Bella is enjoying a 1940s style cruise in 2025 could also be home to a 1990s inspired vampire wandering the neon streets of Tokyo in the year 2998. It might sound impossible, but that’s exactly the point. The Retroverse thrives on the what ifs.
Each photoshoot adds another thread to its growing tapestry. I want every session to leave people asking questions: How do these stories connect? Who are these characters? What world are they part of?
The Retroverse is about creation, about stepping into the unknown and embracing artistic freedom. Every participant becomes a storyteller, shaping their own piece of this universe.
So ask yourself: what two worlds would you fuse together? What background character have you always wanted to know more about?
Welcome to The Retroverse, where imagination has no timeline.
How do you choose the themes and styles for your Retroverse photo shoots?
Each photo shoot within The Retroverse is carefully curated to capture a specific era while adding a modern twist. I draw inspiration from various sources, including classic films, music videos, and fashion trends from different decades. The process involves a lot of brainstorming and collaboration with models and other artists to bring these ideas to life. I aim to create an immersive experience that transports viewers to a different time and place while still feeling fresh and relevant.
Navigating Challenges and Embracing Criticism
Like many artists, I struggle with imposter syndrome and the fear of being misunderstood. Bringing the Boudoir Dreamscape to life hasn’t been without its challenges. There have been times when a shoot didn’t quite hit the mark I was aiming for, but I’ve learned to view these setbacks as opportunities for growth. I use those experiences to experiment with new editing techniques or to refine my creative process. It’s all about embracing the imperfections and using them as stepping stones toward improvement. Feedback is essential for growth, and I'm working on taking criticism as an opportunity to refine my work and communicate my vision more clearly.
Wing It and Let Honesty Lead
I've realized that overplanning can sometimes hold me back, so I'm choosing to wing it and let honesty and authenticity guide me. By sharing my real-time challenges and successes, I hope to inspire others to push forward despite setbacks.
Whether it’s a romantic escape in Kitsap County or a magical adventure in the PNW forests,
Each shoot is an exploration of new worlds and the soul's deepest expressions.
What impact do you hope the Retroverse will have on the art community and your audience?
Ultimately, I hope The Retroverse inspires others to push the boundaries of their creativity and explore the intersection of different artistic styles. I want my audience to feel transported and inspired, whether they are fellow artists searching for new ideas or clients looking for something unique and different.
My journey into The Retroverse is ongoing. I am constantly learning new perspectives, discovering new characters, and uncovering new stories through each photo session. Every subject helps bring essential world-building concepts to life in a way that others can truly appreciate. It’s a raw and collaborative learning experience between artists, muses, and audience members.
I want The Retroverse to be a safe space for exploration, a place where we can build and create worlds together.
